A review by Stuart Docherty of the newly updated LinkedIn App for mobile devices. I breakdown the different design attributes and functionalities of the worlds most favourite social media for professionals.

The new LinkedIn app, coded named internally as “Project Voyager” was released recently and this article is being written to help our visitors to understand a bit more about it. As social media is seeing a big shift to mobile, around 50% of visitors are using their devices, it makes good sense to bolster your mobile experience.

The app has several features worth mentioning, especially when we think LinkedIn is probably the main social media used by professionals, thus has more benefits to be gained. One of those being the function to see who has viewed your profile which affords a source of potential leads to like minded or interesting people to reach out to.

Clearly the biggest change is to the user interface design which sees a change to the layout and typography; it has to be said that the new design feels like a blend of Google+ and Facebook, which are two solid social media designs. Then there’s the addition of a simple footer menu with the options for: Home, Me, Messaging, My Network and Search.

Home: this directs users to the main feed of relevant posts, which most likely has an improving logarithm behind it, serving up the best ones that would be of interest specifically. Here you can like, comment on or share the posts of others which isn’t new but is made easier and more intuitive. Your posts are easily created as are your photos, which are shared using an obvious top bar that begins the process. And that’s it for the home screen, but that is a design decision, to keep it clean.

Me: takes you to the profile page, showing the number of profile views and views of your last post. Your last post, as like all posts, being an opportunity to share your information and gain interest or shares from others. This is where you would review your personal information, the content you’ve published, connections, biography and achievements. This area has been simplified to better communicate who you are, and what you want people to know about you.

Messaging: is on par in regards to simplicity with the search function, which makes sense, as this page purely provides a list of previous conservations and clearly lists what was said.

My Network: where your current connections are displayed and where new ones can be made. Again the interface and usability has been designed to be clear and intuitive. So there’s no excuse from not following up on those key contacts you made recently. But good social media manners dictate that your don’t reach out to those you don’t know – at least without a good reason for doing so.

Search: provides a way to find and reach out to: people, companies and jobs the three core functions of LinkedIn. The design revision makes this function really easy and powerful to the user. This may even grow over time as LinkedIn as a business moves into or consolidates.
